Join ACES for a day of discovery in Chicago’s charming Andersonville neighborhood! We’ll explore the Swedish American Museum’s “We Are America” exhibit and the Brunk Children’s Museum of Immigration, where history comes to life through hands-on learning and storytelling.
Students will step into the shoes of 19th-century immigrants, traveling from Sweden to America through immersive environments like a farmhouse, ticket booth, steamship, and log cabin. The “We Are America” exhibit expands the journey with real-life immigration stories, historical artifacts, and interactive displays—including a steamship deck, Swedish stuga, early 20th-century woodshop, and mid-century kitchen.
Younger learners will enjoy creative, age-appropriate activities highlighting Swedish culture and the immigrant experience, while older students dive deeper into topics such as the push and pull factors of immigration, Ellis Island, and Chicago’s diverse immigrant history.
After our museum experience, students can bring a sack lunch to eat and then we’ll enjoy a short stroll through Andersonville, a historically Swedish neighborhood known for its welcoming charm, local shops, and traditional celebrations.
